We all know how important it is to not keep everything we have prepared stored in one place, and we have all probably seen the cool hidden cabinets and other ideas to hide your preps. That’s why when I was offered the opportunity to review the 21” Hidden Handgun Cabinet Shelf from MinuteMenCabinets I was thrilled!

Not only were they great enough to give me one to review, they gave me another one to give to you! At the end of this post I will explain how to enter the contest and when the winner will be picked.

Even if you are not sure that you need one of these hidden storage shelving units right now, you will be after you read about them.

Imagine for a second that an intruder has entered your home, or even worse they have you and your family held hostage. They might check for a gun safe or check under the mattress, but they probably wouldn’t give a second thought to a shelf on the wall. This might sound like something out of a movie, but in reality this happens all the time.

Or, imagine someone comes to your front door demanding food and supplies, if you have one of these hidden gun shelves installed next to the door, you have quick access to your weapon and the ability to defend yourself.

Gun safety and personal security is a fine line that most of us struggle with because we want the ability to protect ourselves in a seconds notice, but we want to make sure a loaded weapon doesn’t get into the wrong hands.

This doesn’t just mean intruders, this means family and friends as well. You wouldn’t want to leave a loaded handgun lying around in the living room, but with one of these hidden storage gun shelves you could have your handgun concealed right below your family picture.

Your prepper friends might know what it is because we are always looking for unique and different ways to keep our supplies out of sight and out of mind, but the average person will have no idea. To them it’s just a really nice accent to your home.

They might even say “That’s beautiful, did you get that from Ikea or Pottery Barn?”

Be aware of who knows what it is: Because I just couldn’t help myself I had to brag to my family and show them what I just got.

But then it hit me, my teenager’s think this is the coolest thing they have ever seen, and that could be a huge problem if they decide to show their friends the cool shelf dad has.

Important: This is not a substitute to a gun safe. The main benefit of this shelf is concealment and camouflage, not super strong locks.

With that being said, it might not be a gun safe, but it’s better than putting my gun in the night stand. The gun remains in the safe when I am not home and goes into the shelf at bed time.

I was only half joking about people asking if you got it from Pottery Barn, this hidden gun shelf not the cheap particle board shelf you find at Walmart, it really is a high quality piece of furniture.

Some of you guys out there know how important that it is to your wife to balance function with style, and you also know how important this is to your happiness…I do!

I am always looking for ways to create hidden storage, and most of the time Lisa puts an end to my brilliant ideas before I even get started because she doesn’t want me putting holes in your walls. As much as I hate to admit it, she is probably right…sometimes.

This shelf is a great way for both of us to get what we want. I get my cool hidden storage space, and she gets something that doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb or weaken the structure of the house. Not that I would do that…on purpose anyway.

Not Just for Handguns

Even if you have no use for a shelf to put a handgun in, this hidden shelf can be used to hide anything you can think of that will fit.

• Hiding Important Documents
• Hiding Important Keys
• Hiding Maps
• Other self-defense weapon like Knives, TASERS or Mace
• Even Lisa’s tin foil hat…although hers might not fit.

Placement: Imagination is your only limitation when it comes to where you want to hang this shelf. You can hang it where it gives you a tactical advantage, or hang it somewhere that blends in with everything else in the house.

Right now I have this gun shelf over my nightstand, but I plan on getting another one to place at chest level next to the front door. Because I am so OCD I might even need to buy another one to put on Lisa’s side of the bed to make everything even and uniform.

Hidden Gun Shelf Product Features

Options: The 21” hidden gun shelf is not the only size option at MinuteMenCabinets, they also have 46” units, and 58” units for long guns. They also have a few Concealment Clocks which might be a good lower cost option, but they don’t have the same storage capacity. I might be getting one of these too.

Now that I think about it, my Christmas list is getting pretty long.

Quality: Like I said earlier, this is not the particle board cabinet you will find at Walmart, and quite honestly these are nicer than some of my furniture. ( I have a couple particle board shelves) The craftsmanship is top notch, and just what you would expect for the price.

Sometimes you see a product online and the product you get is completely different because you couldn’t see the flaws from the picture, but you see them after you get it home or unbox it. These hidden gun shelf units are exactly what you see in the pictures and you will be very pleased with them.

Packaging: As you would expect with a quality product like this they put too much time and effort into these shelves to toss it into a box and send it on its way. They would have to get manhandled pretty badly by UPS to be damaged during shipping.

Price: To some this might seem a little high, but when you consider what you are getting it is actually a really good deal. I have some experience with woodworking and I could probably make one of these, but without the right tools, experience and a whole lot of trial and error it just wouldn’t be the same quality.

I might even try my hand at making one of these hidden shelving units (Like this one) but I will do it knowing that it might end up costing me about the same amount of money, not to mention the time involved, and the final product might not look as good as these do…we’ll see.

Easy Installation: I’m all about easy, and these are super easy to install. As you can see in the video I did you basically drill 4 holes, 2 in the cabinet and 2 in the wall, put in the screws and you’re done.

As for cutting out the foam insert, that’s easy as well. Because of the layered material they use you just trace around your gun and use an X-Acto knife to cut it out. This video shows just how easy it is.

Final Thoughts…

Even though I was given this shelf to review I would not give it the glowing review I have if I didn’t think it was worth it. This really is a great quality shelf at a price point that makes it worth every penny.

I have a feeling I will be spending a lot more money with MinuteMenCabinets.com in the future.
