When it comes to movies about preparedness and survival I just can’t get enough. I’ll watch everything from Zombie movies, to documentaries to low budget disaster flix if I am in the right frame of mind. In my seemingly never-ending search to find movies or TV shows I’ve never seen before, it’s pretty hard to find prepper movies you can watch free and watch instantly.
Some of the movies about zombies and disaster scenarios can be a little farfetched to say the least, but they do give us the opportunity to ask ourselves “What would I do in that situation?”
This list is not a list of the best movies for preppers and survivalists, this is a list of movies and TV shows you can watch right now (as long as you have Netflix or Amazon Prime) that you might not have heard of.
In the podcast this week Lisa and I made separate lists of the 10 preparedness related movies that we found, but there were 2 conditions. The first was that you had to be able to watch it instantly, and the second was that you didn’t have to pay extra to watch it.
We talked about most of these in the podcast, and I even added a few more that I thought about after we recorded the show.

Dale’s Prepper Movie List
Survivors (Series Netflix) Survivors is a British science fiction television series produced by the BBC. It depicts the lives of a group of people who survived a virulent unknown strain of influenza which has wiped out most of the human species
Revolution (Series Netflix) Fifteen years after an unknown event has caused all electricity to stop working, plunging the world into another dark age, people have adjusted to life without planes, high-tech communication, and electricity.
Sylent Green (youtube) 1973 With the world ravaged by the greenhouse effect and overpopulation, an NYPD detective investigates the murder of a CEO with ties to the world’s main food supply.
Just about every Youtube video of this full movie had been removed. I was able to find this one, but it is poor quality.
Rumors of Wars (Netflix) A student keeps a journal while a one world government takes over the world and requires everyone to be implanted with an RFID chip. Years later, a soldier finds her journal and questions everything he now believes.
Jericho Series (Netflix) A small town in Kansas is literally left in the dark after seeing a mushroom cloud over near-by Denver, Colorado. The townspeople struggle to find answers about the blast and solutions on how to survive.
Snowpiercer: 2013 (Netflix) Set in a future where a failed climate-change experiment kills all life on the planet except for a lucky few who boarded the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe, where a class system emerges.
Forecast Disaster (Series Netflix) Striking entire regions with no warning, earthquakes devastate infrastructures and leave populations crippled. High-speed winds from tornadoes turn everyday debris in to objects of destruction, while storm surges from hurricanes have engulfed entire cities leaving millions of people without power and water.
Ayn Rand & the Prophecy of Atlas Shrugged (YouTube) This is a feature length documentary film that examines the re-surging interest in Ayn Rand’s epic and controversial 1957 novel and the validity of its dire prediction for America. Atlas Shrugged part 1 Audio Book is also on YouTube here.
Generation Zero 2010 (YouTube) An examination of the causes of the global economic crisis which began in 2008, studying how decades of social changes have influenced financial systems and practices. I wrote about this movie explains why we are in the position we are here, and you can watch it here.
Apocalypse 101 (Series Netflix) 2013 If the floodwaters rise, if the virus spreads, if the bombs go off, these men are ready. Meet four former Marines who believe they have what it takes to survive almost any doomsday scenario.

After Armageddon (YouTube) The plot centers around the Johnson of Los Angeles, California, one of a small number of families to survive a global pandemic that occurs sometime in the future. This movie was made for preppers. Watch here on YouTube.
American Blackout (YouTube) What would people do if the lights went out everywhere? The 90-minute docu-drama, “American Blackout” reveals in gritty detail the impact of what happens when a cyber-attack on the United States takes down the power grid. The question is: when the lights go out, what do we do next?
The Man in the High Castle (Series Amazon) (Nov 20th) What would it be like if we lost world war II and Japan and the Nazis had control over the united states? There is only one episode at the time of writing this article, but I can’t wait to see where this show goes.
The 100 (Series Netflix) When nuclear Armageddon destroys civilization on Earth, the only survivors are those on the 12 international space stations in orbit at the time. Desperately looking for a solution, the ark’s leaders send 100 juvenile prisoners back to the planet to test its habitability. With the fate of the human race in their hands, they must forge a path into the unknown.
Lisa’s Prepper Movies List
The Walking Dead (Series Netflix) Just about everyone interested in preparedness has heard about The Walking Dead, but because it is such a great show we decided to add it to the list. If you haven’t watched it yet, what are you waiting for?
The Hunger Games (Audio Book) While the movie is not available to stream free the audio book is available on YouTube. The series starts out explaining how the country was divided into districts. The thirteen districts attempted to start a revolution against the Capitol. The Capitol won, District 13 was destroyed and, as punishment, an annual televised death match called The Hunger Games was created by the Capitol.
Goodbye World (Netflix) When a mysterious terrorist attack causes chaos in the cities, a group of friends take refuge in their countryside cabin. This could have been a little better done, but it is interesting none the less.
World War Z (Amazon Prime) Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to destroy humanity itself.
Stake Land (Netflix) Martin was a normal teenage boy before the country collapsed in an empty pit of economic and political disaster. A vampire epidemic has swept across what is left of the nation’s abandoned towns and cities.
Flu (Netflix) There is something deadly in the air and nothing can stop it…unless you don’t like reading movies. This is a South Korean disaster film about a flu outbreak, but if you don’t mind subtitles it’s worth watching.
The Colony (Netflix) Forced underground by the next ice age, a struggling outpost of survivors must fight to preserve humanity against a threat even more savage than nature.
The Purge (YouTube) In the future, a wealthy family is held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge, a 12-hour period in which any and all crime is legalized. The video on YouTube is not the best quality available because of the wide angle, but it is free.
Enemy of the State (YouTube) A lawyer becomes a target by a corrupt politician and his NSA goons when he accidentally receives key evidence to a serious politically motivated crime. Interesting enough, this movie was made before we even knew much about the NSA. You can watch this movie on YouTube here.
Reign of Fire (YouTube) A brood of fire-breathing dragons emerges from the earth and begins setting fire to everything, establishing dominance over the planet. This is not your typical prepper movie, but how these people survived is. Watch it here on YouTube.

Tomorrow, When the War Began – It’s a Red Dawn type story set in Australia. Available of Netflix
I like Jeremiah also, It’s available on Hulu
Forget the Survivors BBC seris..It is really bad and leaves you hanging as they only made one season, and look up the old 1970s BBC survivors. There are four or five seasons and its a much better story line and rounds up alot better. And its on Youtube,so it fits the parameters.
You should look at the last ship on tnt.
Here is a short youtube video showing how a real bunker in the Rocky Mountains might be attacked by some raiders. Only 7 minutes long but quite a few like it, at least many interested in such topics. >

I can’t believe you guys didn’t put “Jericho” on the list. It’s tailor-made for preppers:
A small Kansas town dealing with the aftermath of an EMP strike?
If you honestly haven’t seen this series, you need to re-examine your priorities.
It so plausible. Some one made a show with their blueprint for stealing America That’s why it was cancelled.

It’s been a while since this post, but Black Summer is out. Absolutely top zombie series.
I think you now need to add Contagion, given the fact that we’re experiencing a pandemic. It’s a must see prepper movie and discusses social distancing, R-Naught equations, and other topical concepts. It’s also on Netflix! Thanks for sharing this–I have a long movie list now that I’m under quarantine.
