Today Lisa and I talk about how to deal with sanitation issues in a SHTF situation. This was originally going to be a Thursday episode, but because we have had the S.P.T.V. episode and Ken from the prepper podcast on and we recorded this 2 weeks ago I decided to add it to the Surviving Mondays episodes.

We touched on this a little in the podcast with Ken about how a grid down event would be just the beginning when it comes to what we are going to be dealing with. Over time trash will pile up leading to sanitation issues and sickness.

Homemade Cleaner Recipes

 All Purpose Cleaner

  • 1 spray bottle
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon dish soap
  • 2 Tablespoons white vinegar

Shake the mixture up, and then let it set for a few minutes. Add warm water almost to the top of the bottle, put the sprayer on, and shake it up. Let it set for a few more minutes, and then add a few drops of your favorite essential oil, and bam! You have a natural all-purpose cleaner.

Glass and Mirror Cleaner

There are some different recipes for this, both are easy, and both work, it just depends on what you have to make the cleaner.

  • 1 spray bottle
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 3 drops of your favorite essential oil

Mix ingredients together, spray on the mirror, and wipe clean! Now that’s easy! And you can make several gallons of this cleaner for what it would cost you for a 16 oz bottle of windex, AND you are not using chemicals to clean. Both of these recipes work best when using a microfiber cloth, which you can get a 2 pack at the dollar store.

Here is the other one…

  • ¼ cup rubbing alcohol
  • ¼ cup white vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 cups warm water

Mix ingredients in a spray bottle, and clean your windows and glass!

Floor Cleaner

(For Laminate, Tile, and Linoleum Floors NOT Hardwood!!!!)

  • 1 Spray Bottle
  • 1 cup water
  • ¾ cup vinegar
  • ¾ cup rubbing alcohol
  • 2-3 drops castile soap, or dawn dish soap
  • 10 drops of your favorite essential oil

Add all ingredients to your spray bottle, put on the sprayer and shake it up!

After you have swept your floor, spray the cleaner on the floor, and wipe with a microfiber cloth.

The first time you use this recipe, try it in a small area first to make sure it will not alter your floor!

Soft Scrub Bathroom Cleaner

  • ¾ cup baking soda
  • ¼ cup castile soap
  • 1 Tablespoon water

Combine the baking soda, and castile soap, and then add the water to make a paste. Then just scoop out some of the cleaner, and start scrubbing! This will make enough to clean 2-4 bathrooms, and works great for tubs, sinks, and toilets. If you have left overs, just store it in an airtight container so it doesn’t dry out.

Granite Cleaner

  • 1 spray bottle
  • ¼ teaspoon liquid dish soap
  • ¼ cup rubbing alcohol
  • 2 ½ cups of water

Add ingredients to spray bottle and gently shake, then spray on your countertops, and wipe clean.

Survival and being prepared should not only be a passion, it should be a lifestyle. The definition of a prepper is "An individual or group that prepares or makes preparations in advance of, or prior to, any change in normal circumstances, without substantial resources from outside sources" Like the Government, police etc. I don't believe that the end of the world will be the "end of the world" I believe it will be the end of the world as we know it now.
