Should You Bug In Or Bug Out?

Play

Podcast LogoWe discuss bugging out as well as some of the things you might need to consider before you make your decision. I also go over some of the basic terms that a new prepper to the community might not know.

The make up of your family will be a big factor when it comes to bugging in or bugging out. Bugging out might not be the best idea if you have young children, young children need to be cared for while teens will give you an extra advantage. Having two teenage children are like having two extra adults. The odds favor a family of average age, parents between 35 and 45 with teenage children. The people you have in your group will be a big factor when it comes to bugging out, disabled (mentally or physically) elderly, young children or teenage children.

Topics We Discussed In This Episode:

  • Nothing in your bug out bag will guarantee your survival, that are only tools to help you through situations. The most important tool is between your ears. You need to have the skills to use these tools and have the knowledge about how to use them.
  • Skills like reloading your weapon, starting a fire, sharpening your knife, using a compass, apply a turicuit and basic first aid,
  • Skills are defined and refined; skills are not “well I have seen it on TV.” Skills are something you actualy practice.
  • Skills trump gear every time: a plumber is still a plumber without the tools, he still has the knowledge to complete the job even if he doesn’t have the tools. If you know how to do something, you might be able to figure out an alternative way to get the job done.

3 Skills Every Prepper Should Have:

  •  Know 3 different ways to purify water.
  • 3 different ways to start a fire.
  • Learn about first aid: how to control bleeding, broken bones, how to make a tourniquet or basic wound dressings get a first aid book.
  • Watch videos on first aid, building and setting traps, water purification and starting fires.

Cons of bugging in:

  1. It will be difficult no mater how prepared you are if you live in a highly populated area.
  2. The “bad guys” might already know you are prepared, you quickly become a target. Hide stuff in plain sight, fly under the radar.
  3. If a disaster strikes you might not have a choice to bug in.
  4. If possible it would be better for a “weaker” group to be already somewhat bugged out.

 Preparing To Bug Out:

  • Have a plan for getting to your bug out bag.
  • have a go bag in your car just incase you can’t get to your bug out bag and other emergencies.
  • Have a plan if you can’t get to your bug out bag, stashes. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
  • Have a map of the area you live and the area you plan on bugging out to.
  • Have a manual for each fire arm you own, use them and be comfortable with them.
  • Learn and practice how to set snare traps. I have a few posts on the website about living of of mother nature and there is a huge amount of information available on the internet
  • Learn what kind of animals live in your area and your bug out area.
  • Know what disasters are more likely in your area and where the disaster shelters are (if any.)

Survival and being prepared should not only be a passion, it should be a lifestyle. The definition of a prepper is "An individual or group that prepares or makes preparations in advance of, or prior to, any change in normal circumstances, without substantial resources from outside sources" Like the Government, police etc. I don't believe that the end of the world will be the "end of the world" I believe it will be the end of the world as we know it now.
