This week Lisa and I talk about preparing your garden battle plan. Even though it’s the middle of winter and there is snow on the ground in most places there are some things we can do now to get ready for the coming gardening season.

Getting your garden planned out now and starting some of the things now like composting and deciding on what you are going to grow are things we can do before we even think about planting.

What We Talked About…

1. Plan your space. What do you want to change.

2. Decide what you want to grow and where you want to grow it.

3. Do your research. Will it grow in your area and does it need to be pollinated. A good example is when I tried to grow cucumbers in my greenhouse last year, they need bees to pollinate them and because if that I had to manually pollinate them.

4. Some of the different seeds heirloom VS hybrid seeds.

5. Starting your seeds.

We went over quite a bit about composting in this show. This is a great time of year to get started because of all the snow and moisture. We also talked about what to put into your compost pile and what not to.

Good For Compost

  • Paper products like cardboard (ripped up) cereal boxes and coffee filters
  • Uneaten vegetables like corn cobs and even eggshells and sawdust.
  • Non treated wood shavings and wood ash.

Bad For Compost

  • Meat products will invite animals (predictors)
  • Feces from carnivores…including us!

We also went over container gardening and thinking outside the box. while plants are pretty, it might be a better idea to plant food that will add to your preparedness. If you use plants like pumpkins, squash, pole beans you can make it look pretty, but still be valuable.

Keep in mind, you will need flowers for the bees.

We also talked about testing you soil. here is that link.

Survival and being prepared should not only be a passion, it should be a lifestyle. The definition of a prepper is "An individual or group that prepares or makes preparations in advance of, or prior to, any change in normal circumstances, without substantial resources from outside sources" Like the Government, police etc. I don't believe that the end of the world will be the "end of the world" I believe it will be the end of the world as we know it now. Regarding your lettuce that “bolted”… don’t cut those shoots! I found out last year that these shoots flower and produce FREE seeds! You or your wife mentioned that you’re using heirlooms, this is the good part of them! The ones I had bolt on me were volunteers from the previous year.
