Flu First Aid KitThis week Lisa and I talk about what the layers of skin are and how healing works. Understanding how the skin works will give you a better idea about how healing works, and why healing works differently for others. Medications, age and health of the individual.

As the body’s largest organ the skin serves several complex functions, and there are numerous factors that influence the skins ability to adequately function such as medications, age and health of the individual.

Skin Layers

1. Epidermis: This is the outer layer of skin and is 5 layers thick. The epidermis regenerates itself every 28 days.

2. Dermis: The 2 layers of the dermis contain nerve endings, blood vessels, capillaries, sweat glands and hair follicles.

3. Subcutaneous Tissue: This is where the fat, connective tissue, major blood vessels and nerves are.

6 Major Functions of Skin

 1. Protection: Protects against pathogens, chemicals, viruses and bacteria. Protection to the body from harmful effects of the sun and radiation.

2. Thermoregulation: This skin function regulates body temperature through sebaceous glands.

3. Sensation: Your nerve endings react to touch, pressure, heat, cold, vibration and tissue injury.

4. Metabolism: Oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide enter your skin in small amounts. Because of this, medicine by ointments and patches are used by doctors. Cosmetic and skin care products can also enter the skin and penetrate the bloodstream this way.

6. Immunity: Certain cells in the skin work closely with the immune system to fight off bacteria, viruses and other nasty things that land on your skin.

5. Communication: Nerve endings in your body react to the sensations the skin feels, alerting your brain to the new feeling in an instant.

4 Phases of Wound Healing

Hemostasis: when the body senses an injury it floods the area with blood and clotting agents.

Inflammation: Once bleeding is controlled the focus turns to controlling infection.

Proliferation: The wound surface begins to become covered with new epithelium, the affected area is mended with new connective tissue.

Maturation: This is the final phase, the remodeling phase. This begins around 3 weeks after the initial injury and can continue up to a year.

How Healing Works

Towards the end of the podcast we talked about how healing works and what we can do to expedite the process. There are some best practices we can do right now, but in an SHTF scenario we might have to do what we can with what we have.

Survival and being prepared should not only be a passion, it should be a lifestyle. The definition of a prepper is "An individual or group that prepares or makes preparations in advance of, or prior to, any change in normal circumstances, without substantial resources from outside sources" Like the Government, police etc. I don't believe that the end of the world will be the "end of the world" I believe it will be the end of the world as we know it now.
